Mommy Power is sleepness nights but finding the energy to make 2 hours of sleep work to your advantage. Mommy Power is a constant to do list that never gets finished but feeling proud of yourself when you can only check off one item. Mommy Power is not making any sense to anyone except yourself because you know exactly what you are trying to say. But most importantly Mommy Power is looking into the eyes of your child and feeling from the bottom of your heart that every minute is worth it when they smile back at you.

Mommy Power is our ability to love, laugh and learn- even when faced with the most difficult job on the planet. Mothers are amazing because we can love and protect another being with every ounce of our heart.. even while it’s spitting up, crying, throwing a tantrum or slamming a door in our face. We have the ability to hold three conversations at once, clean the house, teach a child, ignore bad behavior, pray for help, laugh at ourselves and love our children dearly… all at the same time! Do you know anyone else who holds that kind of power?

The ability to stop tears in their tracks with one look. The strength to hold back a curse word even when no other word can better convey your emotion. The will to drag yourself out of bed when you’re sicker than sick because you’re no longer just taking care of yourself. The intelligence to decipher a language not available to learn in any written form. The capacity to wipe someone else’s butt while simultaneously thinking you are the luckiest woman live. The humbleness in allowing yourself to weep every time your child does something new and magnificent. The super human force and extreme lengths you’d go to save your child from harm. That is mommy power.

I’ve always heard people talking about their motherly intuition and just knowing what their children need. As an outsider, this seemed ridiculous to me. I was sure this was just something that somebody said once as a joke and it caught on. There’s no way you can truly be that intuitive, right?

And then it happened. I was weeks away from my next period, but I knew without a doubt that my baby was coming. I couldn’t have described how I knew to anyone and I didn’t even try to for fear that I was wrong, but I silently prepared myself to accept the upcoming nine months of pregnancy and the roller coaster ride that was to follow.

The day my period was supposed to start, I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to know. I finally told my husband and he scoffed at me. “It’s not even the end of the day yet. How do you know that your period’s late?” Two pregnancy tests later (does anyone really just take one?), we had confirmation of what I already knew. By then, I was at total peace with the knowledge.

So, although I’m not yet a mommy, Mommy Power to me is an unspoken bond between a mother and her children. We’re not given instruction manuals on how to raise our children and they’re not given instruction manuals on how to be the perfect child. But, we’re connected intuitively from the beginning and tapping into that connection to help each other get through the hard times and the surprises is what makes the mother-child bond so special.

My baby told me to prepare. She spoke to my intuition and helped me stay calm in what could have been a total panic moment. I’m so excited to already have that connection with her and can only hope that that intuition between us continues to grow.

Mommy power is the ability to laugh at the odd shaped chocolate chip cookies your two year old made and tell her they are a work of art!!. Mommy power is sending your eleven year old to a new school even when you can see the fear in her eyes because you know that it is for the best. Real mommy power comes from that inner strength that lets your daughter know that Mommy is not perfect, far from it. At the same time you let her know that imperfection is ok.

Mommy Power is digging deep and making many personal scarifies. You don’t realize the level of this sacrifice when you first decide to have a baby and no one really tells you either. I guess they don’t want to scare you away from the amazing experience ahead of you.

 I see many moms desperate to share the ‘real’ story of being a mom and many moms afraid to do this. But it’s in the sharing that we really acknowledge this power as we empower each other to be incredible mothers with our understanding and support.

To me, Mommy Power is realizing that everything you do and say influences your child’s view of the world. This is both, a terrific challenge and a terrific opportunity. Being authentic and turning life experiences into learning experiences is a full time job, and I often learn in the process! I’ve certainly made my share of mistakes, but seeing my little one evolve into a creative, kind, generous soul is the best reward ever!

When you love someone so completely, it can only be your child. Whether you birthed it or not is irrelevant to that divine love. With that deep love is a force of fierce protection and responsibility that cannot be measured either. And that is the wellspring of Mommy Power.

II comes in many forms, but the underlying source of this wonderful power is the love and incredible responsibility that is a Mom’s -to protect and guide her little infant from suckling to toddler, to child, to teen and then young adult.

Mommy Power can be the stern warning to a toddler or the limitation of prized privileges to a teen that has misbehaved or not done chores. It can be the strength to get up in the middle of the night and KNOW what is wrong just by the babies cry. It can be the power to say ‘no!’ or to offer soft cuddles when something goes wrong and not panic when something really goes wrong. It’s instinct and a measure of pride.

 Mommy Power is one of the essential powers of the world as we know it.

For me “Mommy Power” is I finding inspiration in all the moms I meet. I am truly humbled by the women I have gotten to know since becoming a mom. We all know women in our lives who well for lack of a better word just rock. They’re the go- to -gals when life or parenting has got ya down!!! They’re the ones who are there for you when you really need a good friend with a kind word or help make you laugh.

 They work hard whether they work full time or are full time moms. These moms are the ones who when they say they are going to do something, it just happens. They run the PTA, the play groups, corporations, non-profit organizations and their own small businesses. They weather the storms life throws their way with grace and humor. We are better women for knowing these women. But most importantly, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to be a mommy and for me that is true “mommy” power.
