One of our missions here at Mommy Power is to spread the word of mommies doing “good.”
We want to tell the world about mommies doing positive and inspirational things! It’s so hard to find a positive news story about mothers these days. Have you ever Googled the terms “mom” or “mother” in a Google news search? You turn up mostly depressing tales and horror stories. We know the good things that mommies do everyday—and there should be more of a focus in the mainstream media on the positive stories about mothers. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. As mommies, we deserve better. That’s why we’re here—to give mommies the recognition they deserve! If you come across a positive news story about mothers that you think belongs here, please contact us, and be sure to include the link to the story.

How does CEO with a six-figure salary and flexible hours sound? With fewer jobs available and more people feeling shut out of the labor market, many would-be 9-5ers chose to go out on their own. Challenging economic times can encourage entrepreneurial capitalism, according to a recent study by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. More than half, or 51%, of the companies on the Fortune 500 list this year began during a recession or bear market or both, according to the study. Click here to read full story.

When Maureen Lee took her three-year-old daughter Maya salmonberry-picking along the Squamish River, she thought it would be a peaceful break from a day of packing for her family’s move to Mexico this weekend. They were on a trail in Fisherman’s Park — about five minutes from their home in Squamish’s Brackendale neighbourhood — when Lee noticed movement in the bushes. She thought it was a dog, but quickly realized it was a cougar. The cat jumped onto Maya, pinned her in a fetal position and gripped her head with its claws, Lee said Wednesday, recounting the Tuesday evening attack. “I just knew I had to get between them.” Click here to read full story.

“We have large windows so I could see them the whole time,” she said. “I glanced up and I saw that Harper looked like he was climbing back up the slide. When I looked again, he still hadn’t moved, which was strange, so I raced outside to check on him.” A swinging rope on a play set had gotten wrapped around his neck and when Rebecca reached him, Harper was blue and unresponsive. “He was unconscious and I started screaming for someone to help, but a neighbor was mowing the lawn so no one could hear me,” she said. “I didn’t think I could get the rope off because it was on there so tightly, but I finally got it off and ran with him to the house to get the phone.” As a former lifeguard, Rebecca said some of the basics of CPR came flooding back to her as she dialed 911. Felicity Chapman had a newborn, a design business in its infancy and a problem. They did not get along. After the birth of her first daughter, Chapman decided she would only work part-time, but found it all but impossible to juggle both her clients and childcare. Chapman knew she needed to find some flexible childcare that would allow her to accommodate her clients’ needs, without shortchanging her daughter. “I didn’t want to leave her with just anyone and I couldn’t tell my clients that I can only come from Monday to Wednesday from 9-12, because that’s the only time when I have childcare,” she said, echoing the sentiment of many working mothers. “I thought there has got to be a better solution.” Click here to read full story.

She was raised by a single mother in a housing project and went on to achieve her dream through hard work and perseverance – that’s why I like Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama’s nominee for Supreme Court justice. The other reason I like her is because I can relate to Sonia Sotomayor’s life story. Judge Sotomayor’s family came to New York from Puerto Rico during World War II. She was raised by her mother, Celina Sotomayor, in the Bronx after her father died and was inspired to be a lawyer, attending Princeton University and Yale Law School. Click here to read full story.

Young moms in Des Moines are using blogging and social networking tools to meet new people, talk about the ups and downs of motherhood and share their children’s progress with friends and family. Jody Gifford, 36, started blogging about three years ago at sadiegifford.blogspot.com, shortly before her daughter was born. Now that the stay-at-home-mom also has 1-year-old twins, she says Internet applications like Blogger, Facebook and Twitter have helped her stay connected to the world outside her house. “They make you go from being isolated to having a community of friends, even if you don’t know what they look like,” she said. “It makes you feel like a person again. I can do something other than change diapers and feed babies.” Click here to read full story.
